Wisdom Wednesday #7 - Fulfilling Your Legacy

This week, I emphasize staying true to your values to fulfill your legacy.

When your name is spoken years from now, what do you hope people will remember you as? What do you, as an individual, wish people would remember your legacy as? Whether it be your impact on others, your kindness, or the passion you brought to everything you cared about, you will be commemorated in some way, shape, or form. Legacy is not simply created through one action—it is a journey shaped by the choices we make each day.

Looking past the superficial level of accomplishments or awards, your legacy is shaped by how you affect others and contribute to the world around you. When creating your legacy, it is important to remember that you need to fulfill it through what you truly believe in. Your values will be the foundation for the legacy you will ultimately accomplish.

We all have aspirations for what we believe is a meaningful life, and each day offers the opportunity to work toward that vision. Ask yourself: What principles do I want to embody? What values do I want to be remembered for? Reflecting on these questions helps you clarify your values and sets the baseline for your life’s impact.

I want to emphasize that fulfilling your legacy is not something that can be easily accomplished through one action—it is about enduring the journey. Each day, you add another piece to the puzzle that is life. It’s not about rushing through or completing the puzzle all at once, it is about showing up and adding pieces one step at a time. Making small, purposeful decisions and staying true to your values over time will build the legacy that you leave behind.

The beauty of this self-discovery is that you will face setbacks, challenges, and moments of doubt along the way. Remember, these are part of the process. Reflecting on the valiant discipline of greats like Michael Jordan helps me stay motivated and focused on the journey. When rookie Michael Jordan air-balled one of his shots, did he give up? No—he stayed motivated and resilient, even scoring a historic 63 points in a playoff game. These early challenges helped shape his career, contributing to why many consider him the greatest of all time in his sport. Much like Jordan, your legacy will not be determined solely by the obstacles you face, but by how you rise above them, learn from them, and keep moving forward.

Just as Jordan faced setbacks that shaped his legacy, we too must navigate our own challenges. Your legacy is not just about what you accomplish—it is about the person you become in the process. By focusing on growth, integrity, and self-fulfillment, you can create something long-lasting and meaningful that will continue to inspire, even long after you are gone.

One thing I want to resonate with you after reading this article is that this is all determined by you. Your goals, your legacy, and your impact on the world are all shaped by the choices that you ultimately want to make. You hold the power. It is so easy to fall into the trap of letting other people guide your life or grasp past mistakes, but these outside forces become irrelevant when you stick to your values.

It takes a while to discover what destiny you want to leave behind, though. I tried a lot of various activities and met a lot of people to realize what my values were. It takes effort and time to discover your passion and who you want people to know you as. I found a lot of adoration in community service and business, so I know now that I want to create and leave a meaningful change in my surroundings while pursuing opportunities that allow me to grow and contribute to the business world. These passions align with my values of helping others and making a positive impact, and now, I have a clearer sense of the legacy I want to build.

The journey may not always come easy, but the power to keep going lies within you. Just as I’ve learned to overcome challenges and setbacks, so can you. Your legacy will be shaped by the decisions you make today, and each choice brings you closer to becoming the person you aspire to be.
